End-of-Life Care and Euthanasia
End-of-Life Care and Euthanasia
Helping the families of Walla Walla and the surrounding communities navigate difficult decisions with compassion, comfort, and support.
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest parts of loving them.
At Associated Veterinary Medical Center, we approach end-of-life care with empathy, honesty, and deep respect for the bond you share with your pet. Whether you are beginning to notice changes in your pet’s quality of life or facing a more immediate decision, our veterinary team is here to help guide and support you without judgment or pressure.
Our goal is to help you feel informed, supported, and never alone during this stage of your pet’s journey.

Quality of Life Conversations
Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing when it may be time.
Our veterinary team takes time to listen, answer questions, and help families understand what their dog or cat companion may be experiencing physically and emotionally. These conversations are deeply personal, and every family’s situation, goals, and needs are different.
We may discuss:
- Pain and comfort levels
- Mobility and daily function
- Appetite and hydration
- Breathing changes
- Anxiety or cognitive decline
- Chronic illness progression
- Good days versus difficult days
- Your pet’s overall quality of life
“We believe these decisions should come from a place of compassion, understanding, and support, never judgment.” — Dr. Emily Perkins.
When You’re Not Sure
Many families worry about making the decision “too early” or “too late.”
If you are unsure, you are not alone. These conversations are often emotional and complicated, especially when pets have been part of your family for many years.
Our team is here to help you evaluate your pet’s comfort, quality of life, and daily experiences with honesty and compassion.

Meeting Families Where They Are
Some families want guidance and reassurance. Others already know the decision they need to make, but need support navigating through the process itself.
At AVMC, we strive to meet people where they are emotionally and practically. We are intentional with our time, our communication, and the role we play in supporting families through these deeply difficult moments.
That support may include:
- Talking through concerns and quality-of-life changes over time
- Helping families understand available options and what to expect
- Supporting pets with fear, anxiety, pain, or mobility limitations
- Creating as calm and peaceful an environment as possible
- Simply sitting, listening, and being present when someone needs support
We understand that no amount of time with a beloved pet is ever enough, and saying goodbye is one of the hardest decisions a family can face. Our role is to help families feel supported, informed, and cared for with compassion, dignity, and empathy throughout the process.

A Dignified and Peaceful Goodbye
Every pet, every family, and every goodbye is different.
At Associated Veterinary Medical Center, we approach end-of-life care with deep compassion, patience, and respect for the bond you share with your pet. We understand these moments are incredibly personal, and our goal is to help create an experience that feels calm, supportive, and centered around what is most comfortable for both you and your pet.
We take time to talk with families about what feels right for them, whether this is their first experience navigating euthanasia or something they have been through before. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach.
Whenever possible, we tailor the experience around your pet’s emotional comfort and your family’s needs. Depending on the situation, this may include:
- A quieter, more private space to spend time together
- The ability to arrive and move through the visit in a calmer, more peaceful way
- The time your family needs to be with your dog or cat companion before and after saying goodbye
- Soft blankets, favorite treats, and comforting touches whenever possible
- Gentle support focused on helping pets feel relaxed and comfortable
- Flexibility in how and where families spend these final moments together
- Outdoor spaces, including the yard behind the clinic or horse barn area, when a more open and peaceful setting feels right for your pet and family
Support & Aftercare
We understand that grief and loss look different for every person and every family. There is no “right” way to navigate these moments, and we strive to support families with compassion, patience, and care long after goodbye has been said.
Our team will gently guide you through available aftercare options, answer any questions you may have, and help you make the decisions that feel most meaningful and appropriate for your family and your pet.
Aftercare options may include:
- Individual or communal cremation
- Paw print keepsakes
- Fur clippings upon request
- Memorial resources and grief support information
Even in these final moments, our goal is to help families feel supported, cared for, and never rushed through the process.
