Microchipping
Protecting Pets Through Microchipping
Permanent Identification That Helps Bring Pets Home
Microchipping is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help lost pets reunite with their families.
At Associated Veterinary Medical Center, we strongly recommend microchipping for both dogs and cats, including indoor pets. Collars and tags can fall off or become unreadable, but a registered microchip provides permanent identification that can be scanned by veterinary hospitals, shelters, and animal control organizations.

How Microchips Work
A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, placed just beneath the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades.
Each microchip contains a unique identification number linked to your contact information in a registration database.
If your pet is found and scanned:
- The microchip number appears
- The registry is contacted
- You can be notified and reunited with your pet
The microchip itself does not track your pet’s location or act like GPS.
Why Microchipping Matters
Even the most cautious pet families can experience unexpected accidents. Doors get left open, fences fail, carriers slip, and frightened pets can escape in unfamiliar situations.
Microchipping provides permanent identification that can help increase the chances of being reunited with your pet if they are ever lost.
Microchipping may help:
- Increase the likelihood of reunion if a pet becomes lost
- Provide permanent identification that cannot fall off
- Offer added peace of mind for pet owners
- Support shelters and veterinary teams in identifying found pets
Keeping your registration information up to date is an important part of ensuring the microchip remains effective.
Because indoor pets can also become lost, we recommend microchipping for both dogs and cats.

A Quick & Safe Procedure
Most pets tolerate the procedure very well, similar to receiving a vaccine.
Microchipping is:
Quick and minimally invasive
Safe for dogs and cats
Often performed during wellness visits or surgery
Designed to last for your pet’s lifetime
